Tavern Talks – Sunday, 9/13, 1-3pm

On Sunday, September 13, 2015, you are all invited to join the Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust for our monthly round of conversation on diverse topics and enjoyment of the extensive beverage list (including non-alcoholic beverages as well as many beers). The food menu is pretty tasty, too!

Mistress Scheherazade al-Zahira will discuss her research on the history and use of coffee during the Renaissance time period.

Where: City Tap House (citytaphouse.com), located on the north side of Walnut Street between 39th and 40th Streets, on the 2nd floor balcony of the Radian Building. Enter through the street-level door between Capogiro and Jimmy Johns, and take the elevator to the 2nd floor.

When: Sunday, September 13th, 1-3pm.

PARKING:
There is metered street parking on the blocks around the restaurant, and FREE street parking (even on the major streets) once you are as far west as 42nd Street. Please pay attention to signs for loading areas, driveways, hydrants, and other impediments to free and easy parking.

There is also a pay parking lot on the northwest corner of 40th & Walnut (entrance on Walnut) attached to the Fresh Grocer, but it’s a little pricey.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
Very easy to get to via SEPTA. Take the El to 40th and Market and walk south to 40th and Walnut, or take the 21 bus to 40th and Walnut. Always close to the trolleys and other buses.

Tavern Talks – June 14th 1-3pm

The day after the Iron Bog Investiture, you are all invited to join the Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust for our monthly round of conversation on diverse topics and enjoyment of the extensive beverage list (including non-alcoholic beverages as well as many beers)

In June the conversation will wander far afield to the topic of cooking in Japan’s Momoyama period. Livia Petralia has been researching this topic for the past year and will have just returned from cooking at the Find Hungry Samurai event. This will not be a polished talk and there will not be handouts. But there are some surprising differences and I can tell you about the quest for perfect broth.

Hello All,

Tavern Talks, like Spring, are just around the corner. As we finish out our winter stores, what, you might ask yourself, might we do in the coming spring and summer to stock up for next winter? Well, in her talk “We be Jammin’ … And Drying and Smoking…”, this month’s speaker, Alana O’ Keeve asks you to join her she explores medieval methods of food preservation, including drying, salting, smoking, pickling, and preserving in honey. Come plan your summer garden with the harvest in mind!

All the best to you!

Reminder: Tavern Talks Return! Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015 1PM @ City Tap House

Good morrow, friends!

Tavern Talks are back! Same location, slightly different format. The main change is that we will only have one speaker so as to allow for a more full talk and for longer Q&A. This month we’ll be covering the season topic of snowflakes! Xanthippe Ouranina will be sharing with us the medieval scientific understanding of snowflakes, who wrote about them and what they thought.

I’m looking forward to hearing more! And we hope you’ll come out.

All the best to you!

Tavern Talks in the Bailiwick, Sun. Oct. 12th, 1-3pm @ City Tap House

Ho there!

I wanted to remind the world that we will be holding Tavern Talks in Ivyeinrust this Sunday at a pleasant pub in West Philadelphia, the City Tap House (citytaphouse.com). We have an interesting slate of talks.

1) Brunissende Dragonette will be talking about common mistakes that cause armorial returns and how to fix them.
2) Osric will be talking about modern brewing methods in what will be the first in a series of talks on brewing by a number of different local brewers.
3) And I will be talking a little bit about tablet weaving and looms for narrow-wares.

We’re going to be at City Tap House, a pub/restaurant in West Philly. It is located on the north side of Walnut Street between 39th and 40th Streets, on the 2nd floor balcony of the Radian Building. Enter through the street-level door between Capo Giro and Jimmy Johns and take the elevator to the 2nd floor. It’s tucked away, but this allows them to have a whole roof worth of pleasant open-air fire pits. Please see following the main text for directions!

Also note, there will be Pumpkin Ale tasting festival going on, so it will likely be crowded. We may end up outside at one of the fire pits. Please bring a sweater just in case there is a breeze, but otherwise the weather looks good!

Tavern Talks in Ivyeinrust (Fall schedule and call for talks)

Hello fellow SCAdians!

After catching our breath from Pennsic and a couple of local events, including a wonderful River Wars, we are going to continue our series of informal talks and conversations which we began earlier this year.

These take place in West Philly, close to the U Penn campus, generally on the 2nd Sunday of every month from 1:00-3:00 pm. Our venue is the City Tap House (http://www.citytaphouseucity.com/)

In the next week or so, we’ll be announcing the line-up for the October event, along with which we will include direction by public transit and parking information. In the meantime this message has 2 aims:

1) We want to let you know that we are starting up again and that the upcoming dates (Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 7, and on into the spring) are all on the Ivyeinrust and Bhakail calendars, so you can put them straight into your calendars from there!

2) We also wanted to let people know that there are still spaces, even as early as the October meeting. If you have an idea for a talk, please do contact me, Brunissende Dragonette, or Livia Petralia and let us know. As I said, we are still looking for submissions for October, so we’d be glad t fit you in. You needn’t have a deep presentation. The format, for those who’ve not been able to make it is 10-15 minute talks with 15-20 minute Q&A discussions. Topics can be about anything that resides in the SCA umbrella, A&S, Martial, Medieval History, Society History and Customs, Administrative notes. Anything that you are passionate about, we are loking forward to hearing about!

Please drop us a note if you have any questions about dates, location, or, most especially if you want to give a talk at the upcoming talks!

All the best,

Ælfric FitzHugh

Tavern Talks – July 13th

Friends, Scadians, Gentles of all kith!

I wanted to remind the world that we will be holding Tavern Talks in Ivyeinrust this Sunday at a pleasant pub in West Philadelphia, the City Tap House (citytaphouse.com).

NOTE TIME CHANGE: We will be meeting from 1-3 pm this month, in spite of previous advertisements. This change was necessary in view of the weather report, new circumstances at the venue, and, most of all, the World Cup match that will be starting at 4pm. We hope that this does not inconvenience anyone unduly.

This month we’ll have two speakers. Baronne Sabine de Kerbriant will be talking on the topic of how to write a recommendation for a polling order. Following that, Katya Vrtis will be introducing us to Rus garment construction and its basis on triangles. I am deeply excited for each of these! Beyond this there will be time to talk, eat, drink, and socialize.

On the topic of food, it should be noted that, in view of the earlier meeting time, we’ll have access to their Brunch menu rather than their lunch/dinner menu.

DIRECTIONS:

PARKING –
there is a paid parking lot on the northwest corner of 40th & Walnut (entrance on Walnut) attached to the Fresh Grocer.

Tavern Talks — June wraps up and July beckons!

Gentles!

June’s Tavern Talks in the Bailiwick were quite a pleasant gathering. Lord Reijnier Verplanck gave a fascinating talk on period styles of eyewear that talked a great deal about heir production, both in period and experimental reproduction. It was seriously cool and provoked lively discussion during and after. The meeting then became a very convivial discussion of many things including SCA policy, History, and Customs, all while partaking in the leftovers of Philly Beer Week!

We in the Bailiwick are really happy that people have so actively come out for this event. We are looking forward to the July edition on July 12th at 3pm at the City Tap House again.  Livia Petralia will be organizing the July event, and we are still looking for speaker/contributors, so if you have a topic, please contact her at seneschal@ivyeinrust.eastkingdom.org . And if you have a topic that you are interested in presenting, but at some point in the Fall, please send those ideas along too, as we are compiling a calendar for the Fall already! You can e-mail any ideas you have to Aelfric FitzHugh (moas@ivyeinrust.eastkingdom.org), Livia Petralia (seneschal@ivyeinrust.eastkingdom.org), or Brunissende Dragonette (check yahoo group for address)., as we are all sharing in the organization of this event.

Await more info on the July meeting in the approach to the 12th.

All the best, and we hope to see you in July!

Tavern Talks – June 8th

Friends, Scadians, Gentles of all kith!

I wanted to remind the world that we will be holding the second edition of Tavern Talks in Ivyeinrust this Sunday (3-5pm) at a pleasant pub in West Philadelphia, the City Tap House (citytaphouse.com). We’re going to be a City Tap House, a pub/restaurant in West Philly.

Last month, we had three speakers who each spoke for 10 minutes after each of which we had a lively 20 minute discussion.. This month we are going to try something a little different. We have one speaker, Lord Reijnier Verplanck, who will be talking about his research and work on period optics.

After this talk, I’d like to propose a round table topic that we can kick around, each of us bringing our own perspectives, expertise, and most importantly questions to the table (which will be laden, I hope, with some of the many fine brews the pub has on tap and bottled). The topic I would propose is this: Left-overs!

Broadly writ, I’d like to think and talk about scraps, byproducts, and secondary production, both intellectual and physical. How did the various cultures deal with leftovers and byproducts in various media, including knowledge production? What did they do to maximize material or effort? How do you in your recreation of medieval methods of craft and inquiry maximize scraps and byproducts? Do you feel your methods are period practice? Non-period practice, but period in mindset? Or do you have a trick that is entirely non-period, but really useful? Bring your thoughts and a hand-held craft that you don’t mind being near food, and let’s discuss!

DIRECTIONS:

Tavern talks – would you like to speak?

Gentles,

Do you have something that you’ve been researching intensively and want to spread the word? Have you gotten so embroiled in a topic that you want to air it out and get advice? Have you tried something that you’ve not found anyone else doing? We are interested in topics that run the gamut of our hobby.

We’d love to hear from you. The format is a 10 minute informal presentation followed by 20 minutes of convivial conversation, all at a pleasant pub. Our general meeting schedule is the 2nd Sunday of each month (though we’re skipping August for obvious reasons). Our June 8th meeting could use another speaker, and we are eager to create a list of general interest for meetings in July and throughout the Fall. So if you have a topic, but don’t think you’d be ready until October, let us know! We’re looking to the future, so that would be perfect. Likewise, if you could do something on the 8th of June that would be great.

May the sun shine upon your paths!

Tavern Talks (June 8th and July 13th)

Hello,

I’d like to thank everyone who cam out to our inaugural Tavern Talks meeting on Sunday, May 11th. We had three great talks with lively discussion following each. We are forging ahead in planning talks for June and July. While the precise speaker line-ups are still in flux, I wanted to publicize the dates.

We’ll be in the same location, the City Tap House  in West Philly on June 8th and July 13th at 3pm on both occasions.

I am still finalizing the speaker line-ups, so please await more details in the coming weeks. But, if you are interested in making these dates, please mark your calendars!

Yours,

Ælfric FitzHugh

Tavern Talks – May 11

Hail!

The Bailiwick of Ivyeinrust cordially invites all those interested in the Arts and the Sciences to the first in a monthly series of Tavern Talks. We will be gathering at the City Tap House in West Philadelphia for short talks and some friendly discussion over beverages and food.

At this first event we have a fabulous lineup: Baron Mael Eoin mac Echuid will discuss aspects of managing local group websites; Lady Xanthippe Ouranani will give us some orientation to the conception of science as a discipline in the Middle Ages; and Dame Brunissende Dragonette will present some aspects of recreating medieval soapmaking. We will be meeting at 3pm. Please ask for the SCA or for Tavern Talks.

City Tap House is on Walnut Street between 39th and 40th street in the heart of West Philadelphia, walking distance from University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and University of the Sciences. Parking is available in the corner garage at Walnut and 40th, above the Fresh Grocer. Likewise the restaurant is within easy walking distance of the Market-Frankford line, trolleys, and the 21 and 42 bus lines.

Please contact me with any questions you might have at moas@ivyeinrust.eastkingdom.org
