For close to the last decade, Magister John Marshall atte Ford (mka Joe Fling), was my “big brother” – we were both apprentices of Annetje van Wœrden, and John very much became a part of my family. Many Bhakailis and residents of Ivy have known John for the last 24 years he’s been in the SCA, residing in Harrshorn-Dale. He passed away yesterday, following a short illness.
I remember how happy John was when he was recognized and elevated to the Laurelate back in September, and I remember all of the happy times spent in kitchen after kitchen together. Even in the frustrating and exhausting moments, John still shared a deep love and passion for cooking and baking for everyone. That’s what I’m trying to remember today.
In the Bailiwick, John was the head cook for Noisemakers in 2007 and 2008, and in Bhakail he was the feast cook in 2016 and 2018. He was in Ivy and Bhakaili kitchens all the time, and was very proud to be inducted into the Order of the Master of the Horse (2016) and Order of the Harlequin (2017) in Bhakail.
At this time, please don’t reach out to his beloved wife, Dame Elizabet Marshall. If you wish to pass along a message, please do so through myself, Maggi Buckler, or Elizabeth McMahon. If you have photos or memories of John, please send a reply or email me directly; they would be very appreciated, and Elizabet will be reading them all in due time.
A celebration will be planned for later in the year. In lieu of flowers, etc., please consider making a donation in the memory of Joe Fling to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. Information will continue to be shared as it becomes available.
With deep sorrow,
Martyn–
