In 1405, fisherman-turned-surveyor Bertran Boysset began a book project that would last until his death ten years later: writing out and illustrating a text on surveying methods which was, by his account, originally composed by a famous king and a reknowned doctor of an earlier generation.

Come learn about this puzzling text and help test the methods described in its pages. According to Boysset, how did surveying work, and why was it important? Participants will learn about medieval measurement and make their own measuring rods, and then try their hand at drawing their own instructions as a part of a collaborative response to the 1405 volume.

Text in image copied into body of the email, plus an image of a page from the manuscript with an illustration of an artichoke field being measured with a long ruled stick.
